Isabel Avendano Gil, PhDPostdoctoral Therapist
Born and raised in Venezuela, Isabel was a high-performance tennis player until a sports injury sidelined her tennis career and sparked her interest in the connection between physical and emotional resilience. This turning point led her to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Yacambú University in 2018 and to become a licensed psychologist in Venezuela. Seeking new opportunities, she moved to the United States, completing an associate degree from Brookhaven College before pursuing her doctorate in School and Clinical Psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University.
During her doctoral internship in Arlington, Texas, Isabel conducted psychological assessments and provided therapy for children from diverse backgrounds, including those in foster care, as well as youth with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her training has spanned hospitals, schools, clinics, research settings, and organizational environments in both Venezuela and the United States, affording her a broad foundation to adapt her work to each client’s needs and cultural background.
Isabel works with adolescents, adults, and couples facing emotional and relational challenges. She is particularly passionate about working with patients struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship and identity concerns, disordered eating, symptoms of bipolar disorder and all forms of trauma. She blends a humanistic, person-centered philosophy with evidence-based approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and trauma-informed intervention. Isabel believes that her diverse approach allows her clients to manage distress, build resilience, and make meaningful, lasting changes. Fluent in English and Spanish, Isabel values the richness of identity and lived experience in the healing process.
No matter where you are in your journey, Isabel offers guidance, compassion, and practical tools to help you navigate life’s challenges and discover your capacity for growth. She believes healing begins with being truly seen and understood; she welcomes the opportunity to create space for reflection, resilience, and meaningful transformation.
Outside the therapy room, Isabel enjoys outdoor adventures, travel and time with her loved ones and her dogs; all of these experiences serve to inspire and ground her work with patients. Supervised by Elizabeth Huber, PhD.
